California 03:48
You had dreams of California, chasing your American dream. Your ma l said, “kid, you’re never gonna make it” like Nelly you jumped off that scene. You’ve pranced on the catwalks in Paris & Rome, took overnight trains, two birds one stone, you’ve dined in the finest restaurants of Madrid but your heart screamed, California. You’re a champagne lifestyle on a Waffle House budget, washing your Chanel dress in your motel sink, it’s a fur coat nae knickers living but I can see you on the cover of the LA fashion. The bright lights, big screens & magazine shoots, the sunset strip as your playground, all the boys they want your number, you’re the queen of the Chinese theatre. You’re a champagne lifestyle on a Waffle House budget, washing your Chanel dress in your motel sink, it’s a fur coat nae knickers living but I can see you on the cover of the LA fashion. You had dreams of California, skipping among the stars, riding that great pacific coastline, if your ma could see you now. You’re a champagne lifestyle on a Waffle House budget, washing your Chanel dress in your motel sink, it’s a fur coat nae knickers living but I can see you on the cover of the LA fashion.

Take my hand honey help me stand, it's not went down the way I planned, the cocaine it's all around my brain. She sits there pristine as snow, she whispers your name before she stakes her claim, cocaine she's all around my brain. Come here honey and please come quick, this old girls driving me insane, cocaine she's all around my brain. The chaos and madness that you seek, you ain't gonna find it in no broadsheet, cocaine it's all around my brain. CC chasing all down the lane, now don't be so coy, you've only got yourself to blame, Cocaine it's all around my brain. Come here honey and please come quick, this old girls driving me insane, cocaine she's all around my brain. Come here honey and please come quick, this old cocaine's making me sick, cocaine she's all around my brain.

I've been known for my hesitation, she is known for her making plans She maps out the way and I just follow her, If she don't say I will drive straight on. I dug a hole big for both of us, and she made no fuss And came and lived there with me. Well you know how I feel about you Well you know how I feel about you Even though I'm not always listening, I'll find out what you need somehow. Early mornings I rise with news and politics, she wakes up to her favourite sounds. She could live in a wonderland, but still she hangs around with me. Well you know how I feel about you Well you know how I feel about you She could live in a wonderland, but still she hangs around with me. Well you know how I feel about you Well you know how I feel about you Well you know how I feel about you

Been working myself to the bone and I don’t know why, my footsteps are starting to sound like the clink of a chain. Dreams of marquee lights and high-end shows, sold for bar room days with nothing to show. Though your dreams fade under the weight, you never did plan it out that way, from the cradle to the grave, it’s easy to get lost in the race, when your dreams fade under the weight. Doing the best that you can do with three young ones and daddy’s been gone for a while, you never seem to find an excuse to paint on your smile, and your love of dancing’s been dead for some time. Though dreams fade under the weight, you never did plan it out that way, from the cradle to the grave, it’s easy to get lost in the race, when your dreams fade under the weight. It’s a long & rough road, when you carry around a pointless load. There’s nothing back there you thought you used to know. Just a load with no use on this road, old dreams that lay under the weight. Though dreams fade under the weight, you never did plan it out that way, from the cradle to the grave, it’s easy to get lost in the race, when your dreams fade under the weight, when your dreams fade under the weight, old dreams fade under the weight.

You came through like a hurricane, changing my ways you made me invincible, the sunshine we harboured, it made us unstoppable And nothing could tear us down, none but ourselves could throw it away The late night line chasing playing Bonnie & Clyde, you were under my skin & the thorn in my side, it was never pretend dear Nothing could tear us down, none but ourselves could throw it away We got lost in the storm, and couldn't find our way home And the holes that you made when you shot me down Are easy to hide love you know, though the scars in my soul Are painted in gold with your name Though it's not the same, no this letting go, as giving you up

They say that time mends a broken wing, a thousand tiny fractures one by one, et the fires rage on until a new dawn comes, and you’ll swing in swift back into the fray Pushed around, displaced, bullets zipping by, the papers entertained, drooling, it blows my mind. Lord, The sky’s on fire won’t you let it rain, and send them hawks into the fray Is this the only way, to get on through the fray. In this strange old time, that’s got you chasing tail, torn by horses, thrown from the cart on this weary ride. You keep on, you gotta keep holding on, I’ve been holding on too tight just to give it all in to the fray Is this the only way, to get on through the fray. Dripping on down from the top, the well is full, it’s just outta reach, shuffling n hustling just to get on by It’s just day by day in the fray. It’s just day by day in the fray. In this strange old time that’s got you chasing tail, torn by horses, thrown from the cart on this weary ride. You keep on, gotta keep holding on, I’ve been holding on too tight just to give it all in to the fray Is this the only way to get on through the fray. Is it from the fuzz or by design I can never tell, can never see the trees wading through this swamp in this new fresh hell. In this strange old time that’s got you chasing tail, torn by horses, thrown from the cart on this weary ride. You keep on, you gotta keep holding on, I’ve been holding on too tight just to give it all in to the fray. Arrest these days, you gotta keep holding on, I’ve been holding on too tight just to give it all in to the fray. Is this the only way, to get on through the fray.

It was a sweaty old affair with lost souls and no shows, low lights, broken strings and the odd forgotten dream. You were silhouette by the stage, warming with a 'la la la', it had been a while since you stepped in front of the light. You were bold, you were fierce, you just oozed cool. Your skin-tight leathers were the perfect choice for tonight, I watched you dance that room, like a ballroom pro You could hear the rain hit the roof as the summer heat had broke the sky, the room was filling up nice as the stagehand said, "it's a sold out show tonight" There was a rumour at the bar my favourite song was on the list, you know the one with the line, 'what am I supposed to do now that I've spent all my gold on you?' It's a line, one of those sentimental lines that just rings true Though you wrote it for you, we've all walked that road, that's why it's my favourite song When you lay, when you lay it down.... When you sing it out for the worn and the weary kind, though strangers looking back, tonight we're all old friends, singing our favourite songs. All the words come alive when you do that thing with the truth in your voice, when you sing it out for the worn and the weary kind, we're passers by in the street but tonight we're all old friends, singing our favourite songs You and your band played around 2 hours worth of tunes, you said, "thank you, goodnight" and with a wave you walked off stage, myself and the crowd stood there chanting your name for just one more song, your reappeared barefoot holding your beat up J45... Stepped to the mic and said, "this song's for y'all weary kind". It made my night, when you strummed that first chord of my favourite song When you lay, when you lay it down.... When you sing it out for the worn and the weary kind, though strangers looking back, tonight we're all old friends, singing our favourite songs. All the words come alive when you do that thing with the truth in your voice, when you sing it out for the worn and the weary kind, we're passers by in the street but tonight we're all old friends, singing our favourite songs

Gypsy Heart 05:09
Strange how the winds they come and change your tide The cocaine lines just aint the same and your whisky's always dry Your expiration date approaching and the year's are passing fast Life just gets in the way when you feel it's your time to shine No nothing ever grows on you, and the winter wind never seems to go Lord, it feels like forever when you threw it all away All the questions that you asked were never thrown your way It feels like forever when the days don't go your way And your gypsy heart don't feel the same Blindfolded, tied up juggling many pies on ice Suspended here in time as the world spins on by Living a second handed life, lord knows you try But you played it like a cowboy, gambling all that's right On getting yourself drunk down on easy street, washing those blues away, no nothing ever grows on you, and the winter wind never seems to go Lord, it feels like forever when you threw it all away All the questions that you asked were never thrown your way It feels like forever when the days don't go your way And your gypsy heart don't feel the same

Django 05:31
Come down off your horse, there’s no need for you to keep going. You’ve killed all your ghosts, now you come home, you’ve won the war The cold sunsets you chase, let them fall and tomorrow you’ll feel all the warmth. Many pimps, outlaws and enemies have died by your hand on the trail. They’ll live in your shadow, it’s a trade off that had to be made. The Mexican standoff you face down at dawn is just you, and the devil within. Now the time has come, come in out the rain and take off your guns. Sometimes a fire needs to rage before a new day is born. The whispers in the wind it still calls out their names as you ride. You hold nothing but anger & hate, it just drives on your pain. How many shots can you take before the gun starts to lie? Now the time has come, come in out the rain and take off your guns. Sometimes a fire needs to rage before a new day is born.

Sold down the river with a hole in my boat, I never saw it coming I was so devote, and I was always on the grind working myself to the grave. They stole my oars, my dignity & pride, I took to drinking too much & screaming at the TV & my good lady, she won’t even say my name. So don’t you coming around here spitting hollow words, the same old lines, do you kiss your ma with that mouth! I paddled with my hands but the river’s too strong. I spied me some gators on the bank giving me the eye waiting for me to sink in. It’s been 12 years now & the water’s at my chin, I just put another final notice in the bin, & my wife’s had the case by the door since 2010 So don’t you coming around here spitting hollow words, the same old lines, do you kiss your ma with that mouth! Roll up, roll up and get your popcorn, strap yourself in, it’s gonna be a long night waiting for that shit-storm to pass on by. I was sold down the river with a hole in my boat, I never saw it coming man, I didn’t even vote and my wife's went and left now I’m on my last legs. So don’t you coming around here spitting hollow words, the same old lines, do you kiss your ma with that mouth. Let’s lay it on the line, we got nothing to lose, well it’s yours and it’s mine, we got nothing to lose. And don't you come around here spitting hollow words, the same old lines, do you kiss your ma with that mouth.

Skulduggery 03:44
Blood it runs thick through these streets and stains the dust below my feet, the smoke it hides the blue up above. No you feel no god around here, just the devil in man. I pushed the dirt off from my chest, and pulled myself from a shallow grave, I saw my son layin’ dead in a ditch, No you feel no god around here..... Just the devil in man, in a suit with blood under his nails, hiding behind a lie that he sells on a billion TV’s, hide your eyes or you’ll catch the decease, no you feel no god around here, just the devil in man. I’ve witness thievery of my native lands, watched ancient ruins be razed to the ground, skulduggery if rife in these old crazy times, No you feel no god around here. Just the devil in man, in a suit with blood under his nails, hiding behind a lie that he sells on a billion TV’s, hide your eyes or you’ll catch the decease, no you feel no god around here, just the devil in man. Blood it runs thick through these streets and stains the dust below my feet, the smoke it hides the blue up above. No you feel no god around here, just the devil in man.

I’m hard on the case, making out like Nick Belane, I'm picking up your scent on this paper trail down dead-end streets at my own expense. You're everywhere I look, every stone I turn I find another crumb with your name upon another clue that gets me closer to you. Where art thou, April? I’ve been once around the sun, to the moon & back, and the constellations between, the distance don’t mean nothing, I’ll just bend space and time ‘til you’re mine, coz I got nothing better to do. Where art thou, April? I’ll catch you on the wind one of these days & I'll sell you in bottles I'm sat at my command centre, soaked to the bone, there’s a red sparrow sat on my window sill , that's been twice this week, oh what does it mean? The greatest dick in all of LA couldn’t help, well who need him he’s just a cheap ol’ drunk, well there must be sign that gets me closer to you Where art thou, April? I’ve been once around the sun, to the moon & back, and the constellations between, the distance don’t mean nothing, I’ll just bend space and time ‘til you’re mine, coz I got nothing better to do. Where art thou, April? I’ll catch you on the wind one of these days & I'll sell you in bottles.

Sunk in the corner all dressed in black with the broken heart across your face, hiding behind some fake plastic smile like it’s some kind of disgrace, does your lonesome canyon echo when you hear his name aloud. The sky wept hard as we stood in silence and said our goodbyes, an old friend spun some funny yarn, our laughter cut through the air, that fleeting little moment of, ‘auld Lang syne’ picked you off the floor. Amazing grace we sang as we lowered him down, one last salute to the keep of the lost n found, amazing grace we sang as the rain poured down, the world stopped spinning, and the lilies died but your heart still sung his song. That big old porch just ain’t the same without your lover around, the creaking of the doors that he said he’d fix are like razors through your mind, and the little ones can’t stop asking. “When’s my daddy coming home?” Amazing grace we sang as we lowered him down, one last salute to the keep of the lost n found, amazing grace we sang as the rain poured down, the world stopped spinning, and the lilies died but your heart still sung his song. The pills and the bottle just ain’t enough to get you through this wreck, you clocked old man’s shotgun convinced it could blow away your pain, your heart sank for the millionth time as you closed your eyes & squeezed. The waves were calm over Cold Water Bay as we said our farewells, not a dry eye in the town when I read your note out aloud - ‘a heart in pieces can never survive, take care of my kids for me’ Amazing grace we sang as we laid you down, one last salute to the lovers and the lost n the found, amazing grace we sang as we laid you down, the world kept spinning and the lilies died, but your heart sung no more.

about

Forty’s The New Thirty - A wee collection of 13 stripped back, self-produced home recordings of songs old & new.

I’ve wanted to do a record like this for a while now, and I hadn’t really released anything since 2021, and with my full-length studio debut coming out a little later in the year, it felt like the right time to get it done.

As I was planning on releasing it on my 40th birthday, my idea was to have 40 tracks, but it wasn’t to be after I busted my ribs in my local boozer one 'Sunday Funday' at the start of last December!

It’s all good though… just means I’ll need to get back in aboot it and put together another wee collection from the 27 tracks that never made it onto this one,
